The KC Red Wings are Norwest Tourney Champs! The U13A KC Red Wings finished their tournament season with a bang, bringing home the Championship trophy in the Norwest Stars Of Tomorrow Tournament.
Despite finishing atop the regular season standings with only one loss in twenty games, the Red Wings had yet to bring home a trophy this year. They were determined to save their best for the last tournament of the season, and wouldn't be denied this time around.
The Wings started Friday morning with a thrilling come-from behind 2-1 victory over the VP Bearcats, and followed it up with an 8-1 win over the Fort Frances BP Royals, powered by four goals by Adrian Mukubvu.
Saturday morning brought a KC showdown with the Golden Knights, and a freewheeling 9-5 win for the Red Wings, with hattricks by both Max McGinnis and Kalin McCarville. The final round robin game would see the Wings fall behind the Westfort Rangers 4-2, and come storming back late in the third to eke out a 5-4 win, with four different goal scorers!
Championship Sunday started early with an 8:00 am semifinal matchup against Elks. The Red Wings would leave no doubt of their intention to end their trophy drought, and would move on to the final with a convincing 7-0 win, with Linden Papineau and Mason deGooijer sharing the shutout in goal.
The final was a showdown with the Norwest Stars, who had handed the Wings two tournament losses earlier in the season. The Red Wings clearly had a long memory, and had no intention of letting that number get to three. They came out flying, getting out to a 3-0 lead in the first period behind two goals from Zoee Hare. The Wings would show their depth by having six different goal scorers in a convincing 8-1 win, to lift their first trophy of the year.
Huge congratulations to the Red Wings players and staff on a great weekend, and wishing them the best of luck in the upcoming playoffs!
